The best games to play with one thumb

March 22, 2026 · Marek Doležal

A huge chunk of mobile gaming happens while you're doing something else. Standing on public transport, waiting in a queue, half-watching a show. For those moments you want a game that only needs one thumb, and not every game qualifies.

The best one-thumb games design around it. Tapping, single swipes, and simple holds all work great standing up. Casual tappers and gentle adventures usually nail this — Big Bass Drop, for example, never asks for a second finger.

Anything requiring a virtual joystick plus buttons is out. Twin-stick controls need both hands and a stable position, which defeats the whole point. Racing is borderline; touch steering can work one-handed on easy tracks but gets rough fast.

My rule of thumb, literally, is this: if I can play it while holding a pole on the tram without dropping either the phone or my dignity, it makes the list.
